Steps to achieve an accurate reproduction of your artwork include:

  • High resolution digital capture of artwork
  • Master digital file and proof
  • Exhibition quality pigment print
Digital Capture

The current state-of-the-art digital capture is achieved through the use of a BetterLight high-resolution digital scanning back attached to a 4 X 5″ view camera. The BetterLight digital scan back camera is capable of photographing artwork with the utmost accuracy. Going from digital capture to digital printing avoids image detail loss. Before access to this technology, reproductions of artwork were achieved using photographic film and making a high resolution digital scan of the film negative or transparency. During this process, image information was lost because of film limitations, as well as the limitations of the film scanning process.

The BetterLight scanning back camera is capable of different resolutions. Judy in conjunction with Light Mechanics LLC, a company owned by her husband Steve Stayton, is now offering digital captures up to 500 MB. There’s no such thing as a perfect scan or capture. For reproduction accuracy, captures will always need some adjusting for color or tonal contrast. We check to make sure all your shadow detail is retained as well as that all your highlight information. All of our equipment is color calibrated in order to yield the best possible reproduction of your original art. Once initial file adjustments are made the proofing process begins.

Master File and Proof

Creating a master file is the objective of this process, a file to be used to print an edition of your artwork or a single pigment print. Using the printing surface of your choice, Judy invests the time required to create a master digital file that yields the best possible reproduction of your artwork. Clients will be asked to approve a proof of their artwork prior to printing any final reproduction prints.

Please contact Judy if you have further questions concerning the process of reproducing your original artwork.
